June 22nd 2008 - In warm, humid and very windy conditions, Kamiel clocked a split time of 1:00:51 at the 20 K mark in the Marquetteloop in the town of Heemskerk. After his nomination during the Amsterdam Marathon last October, the Dutch Olympic Committee demanded a sub 1:01 to qualify, so Kamiel has now qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing!
With only for weeks of semi-regular running sessions under his belt, Kamiel was very happy with this result. His comments: "Time was running out and I had almost no opportunities left. Because of the strong wind, the African colleagues seemed to decide for a tactical race. I needed to run a fast time, however, and thus decided to lead at a few crucial moment in the race. Because of the wind, it turned out to be quite difficult to run below the required standard. I am very happy I did, and I am very glad to be running after seven momths of injuries.
Considering the quick progression, I feel confident I can be ready for a a strong marathon in two months. I have been able to keep fit quite well, mainly by biking. Now I have tot turn this fitness into running efficiency. Having qualified gives me a lot of mental relaxation. Beijing, here I come!".

Hoi Kamiel.
