Good marathon in warm OtsuMarch 4th 2007 - Earlier today, Kamiel ran a good race during the 62nd edition of the Lake Biwa Marathon in Otsu, Japan. After a week of moderate temperatures, the race started at 12:30 PM and 20 degrees Celcius, climbing to 23.5 degrees Celcius at 30 k. Not quite the conditions Kamiel hoped for in March, but ingredients for an interesting race. Until about 30 k, a large group stayed together, which made getting the drink bottles at the refreshments stations quite chaotic. After 30 k, runners started to fall behind one by one and the race was on. Kamiel was able to stay with the African competition until about 35 k after which point he had to let them go. "It was a great experience, running in Japan", Kamiel said. "The staff was very friendly and there was a large number of enthusiastic spectators. One of the reasons I picked this race was it (normally) cool conditions, but this time even the Africans were complaining of the heath" he laughed. "Because of the heat I was not able to run a time which reflects my shape, but tactically I ran very well and it was great to run in Japan" Kamiel summarized his race.
